The regions Zillertal (Ziller river valley), “Kitzbüheler” Alps, the “Achensee”- region, the “Stubaital” or “Arlberg” are just a few great regions in Tirol/ Austria. Hamlets like “Kitzbuehel”, “St. Anton” and “Mayerhofen” is already well- known all over the world. The landscape in Tirol with its picturesque mountains, the green meadows and pastures, the crystal-clear lakes, the idyllic nature parks and of course the hospitality of the locals is the best place for recreation seekers, for hikers and for active vacationer from all over the world. The Zillertal is about 40 km away from Innsbruck and is the biggest valley branching off the “Inntal” in Tirol drained by the river “Ziller”. It is surrounded by the strongly glaciated “Zillertaler Alpen” to the south and east, the lower grass peaks of the “Kitzbühler Alpen” to the east and “Tuxer Alpen” to the west. The largest settlement is “Mayrhofen”.
The Zillertal is one of the most popular holiday areas for hiking, winter sports or just for relaxing. The hiker has everything what his heart desires, from a simple family migration on nice hiking trails on the valley floor to athletic and difficult climbing tours that require surefootedness and dizziness freedom. The Zillertal is particularly renowned for its musical tradition. For instance, several families of travelling singers and organ builders from the valley have been credited with spreading the Christmas carol Silent Night across the world during the 19th and early 20th centuries. More recently, the “Schürzenjäger”- band have had tremendous success in German-speaking countries with their crossover mix of “Volksmusik” and pop.
Mayrhofen is located just at a short distance from the Tirolean capital city of Innsbruck. The town offers a variety of summer and winter sports including skiing, hiking, mountain biking and paragliding. Mayrhofen is situated near the “Hintertux” glacier and it´s about 630 m above sea level. Mayrhofen sits between the “Penken” and the “Ahorn” mountains which provide ski runs in the winter and mountain biking, hiking and paragliding in the summer.
The “Ahorn” has a black run which was once on the World Cup Downhill circuit but was removed as it was deemed too dangerous. The Mayrhofner mountain railways: “Penkenbahn” (up to 1,795 m) and the “Ahornbahn“ (with 160 passenger- cabins the largest aerial tramway in Austria).
