Girona is not just a very historical place but is also a city filled with excitement and mystery. This is proven by certain legends that have occurred in the city:

One of these famous legends took place in the beautiful cathedral of Girona. Legend has it that there was a witch that used to throw stones on those who attended the numerous processions which took place in Girona. One day, on Corpus Christi, she was just about to throw some stones when she heard a voice thundering across the town. The voice “Throw stones, throw stones and stone you will become”. From this day on she can be seen as a gargoyle in the cathedral of Girona. So be warned, throw stones in Girona and you too might become a permanent addition.

Another legend refers to the roof of Sant Feliu. This roof was hit by lightning in the past and was not rebuilt again. According to this legend a little man grabbed the roof after it was hit by lightening as a witch made him fly over the city in order to protect him from evil. Needles to say, this man was never seen again.

Of course Girona also has many other traditions. There are numerous traditional festivals that I recommend you visit, such as the Sant Narcís which takes place at the end of October. During this festival you can see the parade of “Les Gegants”, a parade of the important people of the city dressed up as giants. Furthermore, this parade is accompanied by music and street performances and is therefore the perfect day out for the entire family.

Another age old tradition is the ‘Sardanes’ dance, which is the folk dance of Catalonia.

As you can see, Girona is an exciting place to be. Hear more mystical stories and experience Girona´s famous traditions by visiting, especially during the summer months. Just book an Girona Hotel or an apartment (Ferienwohnung in Girona) and experience it yourself. If you pass the square of Sant Feliu, make sure to kiss the bottom of the lioness statue. This famous ritual has been implemented by the locals of Girona for many years; by kissing the lioness you express that you wish to come back to the city in the future or that you will stay forever. If people do not kiss the lioness, they are considered to be bad inhabitants of the city or disrespectful of its traditions.
